Jean-Pierre Genet, né le 24 octobre 1940 à Brest (29) et décédé le 16 mars 2005 à Loctudy (29). Surnommé parfois bouton d'or du fait d'avoir porté le maillot de leader de la course de la Paix.

Bien que né à Brest pendant la seconde guerre mondiale, Jean-Pierre s'expatria en région Parisienne à la suite des bombardements qui détruisirent la maison familiale !
Il s'engagera assez jeune, après avoir tâté quelques temps du ballon rond, avec l'équipe cycliste de Fontenay.
Avant de rejoindre le peloton professionnel, Jean Pierre s'était distingué dès 1960 en prenant la 10ème place de la Route de France remportée par Marc Huiart mais surtout en s'imposant sur le circuit des 3 provinces devant Gianni Marcarini et Roland Mangeas.
L'année suivante, en 1961, il prend la seconde place sur la 8ème étape du tour de l'Avenir, Perpignan-Toulouse, derrière l'Italien Gilberto Vendemiati et la 3ème place sur la 10ème étape, Bagnères de Bigorre-Pau, derrière Fantinato et Gosta Petterson. Il terminera l'épreuve à la 12ème place, à 16'28" du vainqueur, l'Italien Guido De Rosso. Sur la Route de France, terminée à la 6ème place du classement final, il aurait pu s'imposer lors de la 6ème étape sur laquelle il prenait la seconde place.
Lors de la course de la Paix 1963, il remportait de fort belle manière la 4ème étape et gardait le maillot de leader 3 journées avant d'abandonner pour cause d'induration à la selle dont il se fera opérer à Varsovie ! Pour la seconde partie de la saison, il allait courir en indépendant et se classer 4ème du grand prix de Boulogne et de Paris-Barentin où, pour mémoire, Raymond Delisle prenait la seconde place.
Il passe alors professionnel, en 1964, dans l'équipe Mercier aux côtés notamment de Raymond Poulidor, Jean Gainche, André Le Dissez, Barry Hoban, Gianni Marcarini, François Le Bihan ou encore Félix Le Buhotel. Pour cette première saison parmi l'élite, pas de victoire, mais relevons de belles places d'honneur comme une 3ème place à Saint-Hilaire des Places, deux 4èmes places au Critérium Internationnal d'Issoire et à Vailly-sur-Sauldre, une 5ème sur le Grand Prix de Monaco, une 6ème de Nice-Gênes ou encore une 9ème sur le Championnat de France. Sur Paris-Nice, terminé à la 17ème place du classement final, il se classera 3ème de la 5ème étape, 7ème de la 6ème étape (b) ou encore 9ème de la 1ère étape. Relevons également une 28ème place du classement final du Grand Prix du Midi Libre avec au passage une place de 4ème lors de la 4ème étape (b). Il disputait son premier tour de France pour le terminer à la 78ème place finale avec une belle 6ème place sur la 10ème étape (a). Il avait auparavant disputé le tour d'Espagne avec une 20ème place prometteuse au classement final.
L'année suivante le voit s'imposer sur la 1ère édition du critérium de Plélan-le-Petit, le 5 septembre, devant Désiré Letort et Félix Le Buhotel. Il prend également deux secondes places, sur le Tour de l'Hérault derrière Anatole Novak et devant Hubert Ferrer et à Meaux derrière Jacques Anquetil. Notons également des 3èmes places à La Chapelle-Janson derrière Henri Anglade et André Foucher, à Vailly-sur-Sauldre derrière Jean Graczyk et Jean Claude Lebaube et à Egletons derrière Barjolin et Bellone. Relevons ensuite, une 4ème place sur Bruxelles-Verviers, une 14ème du Critérium National, une 15ème du Henninger Turm et une 17ème lors des 4 jours de Dunkerque avec au passage une 9ème place sur la seconde étape. Sur le tour de France, il allait prendre la 75ème place du classement final.
En 1966, il s'impose à Plémy devant François Le Bihan, termine second à Quimperlé derrière Hubert Ferrer et 3ème du Grand Prix d'Espéraza, en Languedoc, derrière Robert Cazala et Christian Leduc. Sur Liège-Bastogne-Liège, remporté par Jacques Anquetil, il allait prendre la 14ème place (NDLR : Eddy Merckx prenait la 8ème place, Gianni Motta la 15ème, Felice Gimondi la 17ème et Rudi Altig la 18ème !) Sur le championnat de France, il terminait à la 23ème place et à la 26ème sur Bordeaux-Saintes. A noter, un abandon au Tour de France, car arrivé hors délais sur la 16ème étape, Bourg d'Oisans-Briançon, comme de nombreux coureurs !
L'année suivante, il remporte le Circuit de la Vienne devant Francis Campaner. Il termine second sur le Circuit d'Armorique à Ploudalmezeau derrière Walter Godefroot ainsi qu'à Plélan-le-Petit derrière Jean Bourlès et devant Georges Groussard. Pour les places d'honneurs, notons une 4ème place à Miramas et à Iffendic, une 5ème au Circuit de l'Aulne et à Garancières-en-Beauce. Nouvelle participation au tour de France, avec une 88ème au classement final et une belle 7ème place lors de la 3ème étape, Caen-Amiens remportée par Marino Basso.
En 1968, il prend le premier accessit sur les épreuves de Beaulac-Bernos derrière Jean Jourden et d'Issoire derrière Jean Claude Daunat. Il prend la 3ème place du tour de l'Hérault derrière le Belge Legein et Raymond Riotte ainsi que sur le critérium de Pléaux, en Auvergne, derrière le Belge Ferdinand Bracke et Gilbert Bellone. 3ème également sur l'épreuve de Bourg-en-Bresse où le Hollandais Jan Janssen s'imposait. Relevons une 13ème place aux 4 jours de Dunkerque, une 15ème sur Paris-Camembert et sur la Flèche Auxerroise et enfin une 18ème sur Paris-Roubaix.
Sur le tour de France, il allait véritablement se révéler en s'imposant lors de la 17ème étape, Aurillac-Saint Etienne, en terminant second lors de la 2ème étape, Arlon-Vorst, derrière Eric De Vlaeminck et devant Georges Pintens et enfin 6ème de la 4ème étape, Roubaix-Rouen, remportée par Georges Chappe. Il porta même le maillot sur … une demi-journée, lors de l'étape Rouen-Bagnoles de l'Orme suite à sa prise de pouvoir la veille à l'arrivée en Normandie ! Notons également une 41ème lors de la Flèche Wallonne, une 44ème au Tour de Belgique et enfin une 46ème sur Paris-Tours
Toujours dans la même équipe Mercier en 1969, Jean Pierre termine à la seconde place du Grand Prix d'Antibes derrière Raymond Delisle et du circuit d'Armorique derrière Jean Marie Leblanc. Sur le Tour du Morbihan, il prenait la 3ème place derrière Jean Paul Maho et Willy Planckaert au terme des 265 km ! Notons également de belles 3èmes places à Pleaux, sur le Tro-Ker à Guerlesquin, à Sallanches, Ambert et enfin Blois !
Sur le championnat de France, il allait se classer 14ème. Nouvelle participation au tour de France avec une 68ème au classement final.
1970 allait être une grand année avec des victoires au Circuit des Boucles de la Seine devant Raymond Riotte et Jean Jourden, à Quimperlé devant François Le Bihan et François Goasduff, Ploudalmezeau devant François Le Bihan et Rostrenen devant Simon et Bouloux. Notons aussi une seconde place à La Trimouille derrière Roger Pingeon et devant Roger De Vlaeminck, ainsi qu'au Mesnil-Bus derrière Rolf Wolfshohl et Bagneux derrière Jean Jourden et une 3ème place à Garancières-en-Beauce derrière Raymond Riotte et Daniel Ducreux. Sur le critérium de Plélan Le Petit, il finissait 4ème derrière Janssen, Bouloux et Berland !
Pour cette belle saison, il prenait la 4ème place du Prestige Pernod.
L'année suivante n'allait pas être mal non plus car il remportait une nouvelle étape sur le tour de France, lors de la 4ème étape, Nancy-Marche en Famenne, au Luxembourg et, excusez du peu, devant Cyrille Guimard, 3ème, Roger De Vlaeminck 4ème, Karstens, 6ème, Godefroot, 7ème, Eddy Merckx, 9ème ! Il terminait également 4ème de la 3ème étape et 6ème de la 9ème. Sur le Tour de la Nouvelle-France, il prenait le second accessit derrière les deux Belges, Reybrouck et Bruyère. Notons une 2ème place à Plougonver, derrière Gianni Marcarini, une 3ème à Ussel derrière Cyrille Guimard et Joop Zoetemelk et sur les filets bleus à Concarneau, derrière Charly Rouxel et Bernard Thévenet. Le tour d'Espagne, sera également disputé, avec une 46ème place au classement général.
En 1972, il remporte la 6ème étape de Paris-Nice, Manosque-Le Castellet, s'impose à Bagneux devant Bellone et Van Lanker et prend une belle 5ème au Championnat de France remporté par Roland Berland. Relevons aussi une belle seconde place sur le tour du Luxembourg, lors de la 4ème étape, "a", derrière Gilbert Bellone et une 3ème lors de la 5ème étape des 4 jours de Dunkerque. Nouvelle participation au tour de France, soldée cette fois par un abandon lors de 5ème étape "b", un contre la montre disputé à Bordeaux.
L'année suivante, le critérium de Excideuil s'ajoute à son palmarès et il s'y impose devant Régis Ovion et Gilbert Bellone. Il prend également deux belles 3èmes places, lors de Paris-Bourges, derrière Roland Berland et Yves Hézard, et Trégueux, derrière Raymond Poulidor et Bernard Thévenet. A cela s'ajoutent plusieurs places de 5ème sur les critériums de Pleaux, Rieux ou encore Château-Chinon ! Le tour de France sera une nouvelle fois à son programme et il y prendra la 46ème place du classement final, avec une belle 5ème place lors de la 15ème étape.
En 1974, il s'impose sur la 4ème étape des 4 jours de Dunkerque, devant, excusez du peu, Freddy Maertens et Walter Plankaert mais surtout ajoute une nouvelle étape du tour de France, la 14ème, Lodève-Colomiers et en solitaire s'il vous plait ! Relevons une seconde place sur le critérium de Lancy, en Suisse derrière le coureur local Louis Pfenninger. Nous pouvons également ajouter une 4ème place à Landivisiau et une 5ème au Tour de l'Oise.
La 3ème étape du tour d'Indre et Loire tombera dans son escarcelle en cette année 1975 et il terminera 4ème à Nantes et 5ème à Auzances ! Nouvelle participation au tour de France mais abandon lors de la 17ème étape !
Le podium du championnat de France, avec une 3ème place, est acquise en 1976, derrière Guy Sibille et Alain Meslet. Il termine également 5ème à Meaux, 7ème sur Bordeaux-Paris et 9ème du Critérium de Château-Chinon. Sur le tour de l'Aude, il termine second de la 4ème étape derrière le Belge Willy Terlinck. Pour sa dernière participation au tour de France, remporté par Lucien Van Impe, il se classera 43ème du classement final.
Sa dernière saison à ce niveau sera disputée au sein de l'équipe de la FFC, avec notamment Marcel Boishardy, Jean-Jacques Fussien et Jean François Pescheux comme coéquipiers. Relevons une seconde place à Pontoise derrière Bernard Quilfen.
Il arrêtera définitivement le cyclisme à la fin du mois de juin avec à son palmarès 3 étapes du tour de France !
Il restera dans le milieu cycliste en étant commercial pour des fabricants de matériel … cycliste ! Il s'arrêta ensuite à Loctudy, d'où il s'envolera pour le paradis des cyclistes, à 65 ans, en 2005 !

Jean-Pierre Genet était surnommé « Bouton d'Or » du fait qu'il a porté le maillot jaune de leader de la Course de la Paix. Il fut l'un des plus fidèles équipiers de Raymond Poulidor. Il resta d'ailleurs toujours fidèle à l'équipe « Mercier », comme son leader Poulidor. Il termine dernier du Tour de France 1967, couvert de pansements à la suite d'une chute.
Né à Brest le 24 octobre 1940, mais venu très jeune en région parisienne, Jean-Pierre Genet fit une brillante carrière amateur, participant à la Route de France, au Tour de l'Avenir (1961) et à la Course de la paix, où il remporta une étape et porta le maillot de leader, montrant ainsi son aptitude aux courses par étapes.
Passé professionnel en 1964, il fit la quasi-totalité de sa carrière dans l'équipe "Mercier" aux côtés de Raymond Poulidor dont il devint rapidement l'équipier préféré. Régulier, résistant, d'humeur toujours égale, Genet présentait une morphologie trop lourde pour bien se comporter dans les étapes de montagne. Aussi limita-t-il rapidement ses ambitions à celle d'un parfait équipier, protégeant ses leaders du vent, les ramenant après crevaison, animant les étapes de plat et essayant de terminer les étapes de cols dans les délais requis.
Genet participa à 13 Tours de France successifs, en terminant 10, remportant 3 étapes (à Saint-Étienne en 1968, à Marche-en-Famenne en Belgique en 1971 et à Colomiers en 1974). Il prit le maillot jaune à l'issue de la 3e étape du Tour 1968 à Rouen, mais dut le céder à l'issue de la 4e étape, le lendemain, à Bagnoles-de-l'Orne.
Genet remporta aussi, en 1970, le circuit des Boucles de la Seine, épreuve réservée aux Français qui précédait le départ du Tour de France, et une étape dans Paris-Nice en 1972.

Before joining the professional peloton, Jean Pierre had distinguished himself in 1960 by taking the 10th place of the Route de France won by Marc Huiart but especially by winning on the circuit of 3 provinces before Gianni Marcarini and Roland Mangeas.

He remained also still faithful to the team "Mercier" as its leader Poulidor. He finished last in the 1967 Tour de France, heavily bandaged after a fall.
Born in Brest October 24, 1940, but came very young in Paris, Jean-Pierre Genet had a brilliant amateur career, participating in the Route de France, the Tour de l'Avenir (1961) and the Race of Peace where he won a stage and wore the leader's jersey, showing its ability to stage races.
Turned professional in 1964, he made almost all of his career in the team "Mercier" alongside Raymond Poulidor he quickly became the preferred partner. Regular, strong, always even tempered, Genet had a morphology too heavy to perform well in the mountain stages. So he quickly confined its ambitions to that of a perfect mate, protecting its leaders wind, bringing them back after a puncture, animating the flat stages and trying to complete passes steps on time.
Genet participated in 13 successive Tours de France, finishing 10, winning three stages (in Saint-Etienne in 1968 in Marche-en-Famenne in Belgium in 1971 and in Colomiers in 1974). He took the yellow jersey after the third stage of the Tour in Rouen in 1968, but had to give way to the end of the fourth step, the next day in Bagnoles de l'Orne.
Genet also won in 1970, the circuit of loops of the Seine, race for French which preceded the start of the Tour de France and a stage in Paris-Nice in 1972.
